COLD COFFEE

(My writing coach suggested I have a go at ‘flash fiction’–a complete story told in 250 words or less. Here’s my effort, which he said was pretty good. Enjoy!)

“Wanna do something?” asked Dylan.

“What time is it?” said Charlie.

“About 3.”

Charlie looked around the coffeehouse.

“There’s no girls here,” he said.

“No, none whatsoever,” said Dylan.

“We should go someplace where there’s girls.”

Dylan fidgeted in his chair for a moment. “Like where?”

“I don’t know. The gym?”

“You wanna play some hoop?”

“Naah, I wanna do Stairmaster,” Charlie said.

“Stairmaster? You going soft on me, Chuckers?”

“There’s no girls in the gym. They all do that aerobics stuff.”

Charlie took a drink of coffee. Dylan stared at the floor.

“There’s girls at the bookstore, usually,” said Dylan.

“Yeah. I know.”

“They got good coffee there, too.”

“So?”

“So my coffee’s getting cold.”

Charlie sighed. “You’re the one that wanted to come in the first place,
Dyl.”

“And?”

“You said there’d be girls.”

“So what’s your point?” said Dylan.

“My point is, I know there’s girls on the Stairmaster and the stationary
bikes. If you want to meet girls, you should go where you know they
are.”

Dylan blushed. “I know there’s girls at the bookstore, the big one on
Western.”
“You just don’t want to sweat.”

“What are you getting in my face for, man?” said Dylan.

“We always do what you want, you always say we’ll meet girls, and we
never do.”

“So?”

“So tonight let’s do what I want,” said Charlie.

A minute went by. “OK, let’s go the gym. But I’m only giving it an
hour,” said Dylan.

“Cool. I think you won’t be disappointed.”

“I already am,” said Dylan, as he picked up his backpack.

  1. Beats crap out of Tom Clancy’s latest novel. But you should have had something about terrorism.

  2. True, better than new Clancy, but still has to work on being Pratchett. Maybe if you include an Orangutan librarian?
