He finally realizes that he's unfairly comparing his own complex, real relationship to an idealized fantasy he's constructed for himself around this new person.  With that realization, he chooses not to cheat.

What you've presented here is only an extreme example of that.  It's the temptation of fantasy that leads people to make poor decisions.  What they often don't realize is that, eventually, all relationships become complex - and complex relationships work when both people have similar experiences and goals.

But it's a hard lesson - and, unfortunately, not everyone learns it.
