AROUND THE SPORTS RADIO DIAL

Why I don’t like Jim Rome, part 159: Keith Olbermann reported last week on Countdown that, during Rome’s 15-minute eulogy at Pat Tillman’s public memorial service last week, Rome mentioned himself or his radio show 79 times–an average of one self-promotion every 11.5 seconds. Meanwhile, USA Today reports that Colin Cowherd, who replaced Tony Kornheiser on ESPN radio, has accomplished one important goal: his show airs on more stations than Kornheiser’s did, 282 to 276. Cowherd has grown on me, but Kornheiser is still funnier, as this line of TK’s from Friday’s Pardon the Interruption shows: “I’d rather see chicken rotate on a spit than go to the Olsen twins movie!”

  1. I *still* think you should try AM-670 out of Chicago from 10:00 to 2:00. It is Chicago based but without the ESPN hype machine.

  2. That’s growing on me too. Sometimes it’s nice to live so close to Chicago.

  3. Try losing ESPN Radio entirely and having to choose between Rome and a local station that sounds like a couple of 7th graders who found an open mic. The return of Dan and Dibs was much welcomed.
