SWEET FREEDOM

In honor of the 4th, may I present to you the words of our national hymn (yes, we have one), “God of Our Fathers” by Daniel C. Roberts.

God of our fathers, Whose almighty hand
Leads forth in beauty all the starry band
Of shining worlds in splendor through the skies
Our grateful songs before Thy throne arise.

Thy love divine hath led us in the past,
In this free land by Thee our lot is cast,
Be Thou our Ruler, Guardian, Guide and Stay,
Thy Word our law, Thy paths our chosen way.

From wars alarms, from deadly pestilence,
Be Thy strong arm our ever sure defense;
Thy true religion in our hearts increase,
Thy bounteous goodness nourish us in peace.

Refresh Thy people on their toilsome way,
Lead us from night to never ending day;
Fill all our lives with love and grace divine,
And glory, laud, and praise be ever Thine.

  1. Thanks for sharing this, Mark.

    Regarding this weekend, I ask your opinion on something. At a local parade Saturday morning, I noticed there was a huge gap at one point between one parade entry and the next (which hadn’t even turned the corner to come down our block).

    I noted for my parents, and anyone else caring to listen (we held printed programs listing the planned order of entries, you see), that a state senator and a state representative each seeking re-election in Minnesota were in fact the guilty parade entries holding us up. I further noted that they were Republican legislators.

    My question is this: Would Bush supporters find me to be un-American for even noticing the gap? Please note that I whole-heartedly stood and clapped whenever it was clear that we were being approached by Veterans in the parade procession.

  2. Dear Paul:

    Who cares? Holding up a parade for your own purposes is boorish behavior, and people like that don’t deserve to hold public office. You were merely upholding the preamble to our beloved Constitution, which holds that all men were created equal and therefore nobody has a right to hold up a parade just because they’re running for something.

    You, sir, are a true patriot.
