WHAT ARE THE ODDS?

Last Sunday after church, I came out to my car, went to start it, and got nothing but a bunch of clicking noises. Dead battery. A parishioner with jumper cables got me on my way, I wrote a check for a new battery, and nobody got hurt. No big deal.

This morning, about 30 minutes before worship, my wife calls me at church and tells me that her car won’t start. I told her to stay home and I’d look at the car after church. I got home, put the key in the ignition, and the thing made more clicks than a Xhosa marital spat. Another dead battery. What are the odds? Two dead batteries in a week, and both on Sundays?

The post-installation test drive gave me a chance to hear a song by the country duo Big & Rich–something like “save a horse, ride a cowboy.” I could feel myself getting dumber just listening to it. I’m with Mojo Nixon on this one, kids.

  3. I’m with you on that so-called country song. Too bad the word retarded is no longer an appropriate pejorative, because it sure fits here. Where’s Dickie Goodman when you need him? Or even Weird Al?
