R.I.P. JOHNNY
A lot will be written about the passing of Johnny Carson in the coming days. All I have to say on the topic is this: I am 33 years old and I have never accepted Jay Leno as the legitimate host of the Tonight Show. That’s Carson’s gig, in perpetuity.

Leno says he’ll hand the show to Conan in 2009 (can’t see Conan in that time slot). With Johnny’s passing, Leno should leave now to save the show’s title from further tarnish.
I am looking forward to Letterman’s first new show following today’s sad news. I would expect him to be very emotional in reflecting on what Carson, as a mentor, taught him.

Letterman is Carson’s true successor - he’s our generation’s version of him. A midwestern, self-effacing all-around comedian who doesn’t pander to the public and cheapen his image through commercials, etc. It is a shame that he didn’t get to follow Carson on the Tonight Show, but he certainly has done well. Jay Leno is more like the Al Roker of the night.

I’m with you. I’m 36. You say Tonight Show, Carson walks thru the curtain in my head. Still.
