BARRETT-JACKSON AUCTION BLOGGING

Random thoughts from a gen-X car geek:

  • This has to be the greatest collection of geezer sleds ever assembled in one place, at one time.
  • If I see one more ‘Tri-5′ (1955-1957) Chevy, I swear I’m gonna puke.
  • The same goes for all those Blow Pop-colored T-Birds.
  • I mean, I don’t think I’ve seen a Mustang tonight since the Boss 302 in the 4 o’clock hour.
  • A quarter million for a Hemi ‘Cuda is one thing; a quarter million for a replica Mercedes 300SL is something else entirely.
  • Ne’ertheless, I’m glad that most 70s Detroit iron hasn’t yet inflated to the point where it’s out of reach for us young bucks.

  1. I watched a couple hours of it on Saturday, and came away thinking I should never be allowed within 50 miles of Scottsdale. I’d look at a car and think, “That’s $100K,” and it’d go for $60K. I’d look at another car and think, “That’s $75K,” and it’d go for $120K. Cars just aren’t my thing.

  2. I can’t believe I watched 20 of the 24 hours of coverage and there wasn’t one AMC Hornet for sale.

  3. How disappointing. We car guys dream of Barrett Jackson. We have been sold the thing all year. I mean come on, what car guy do you know who doesn’t? How would you like this? I am not in the position to buy this year, but I traveled anyway. I have wanted to go for years. Of course, as probably everybody else, the TV show has really made me even more interested. Now I have hundreds of thousands of dollars in cars, and have been into muscle cars for all of my life. I have had cars in magazines, on TV, and have won a number of shows. You see I came from a drag racing family. I am 43 years old. So, I travel 2k miles, stay 5 days in a nice hotel, rent a top of the line car, go out for dinners, and buy from the vendors, etc. The whole nine yards. Oh yea, I almost forgot, and paid full tilt to get it. Paid as I did. INCLUDING the $50.00 on Saturday just to walk around. Yea that’s right $50.00 for me, and $40.00 for my 80 year old father. And after dragging my way through the zillions of people, AND THE MUD, to get to see the cars on stage, and on the bidding floor. And, what do you think I was told? I am told “If you are not bidding you can’t go on the floor and watch”. I said WHAT? No, no tickie, no payie, no wayie. As you can tell, and as you would be I was pissed. Now, I can understand the reasoning behind something like this, but come on. THEY SHOULD AT LEAST HAVE A SPECIAL SECTION FOR US TO GO WATCH. They know people are coming from all over the country, if not the world. They say it themselves in their advertisements. They know there are only about 4000 bidders, and they also know there will be a good 200k people there. What we don’t count? That’s BS. Hey Craig, WHAT ABOUT US. Ya know the little people. And they also know we all want to see what we see on TV. I AM PISSED, AND I WILL NOT RETURN. Oh yea, and by the way, the quality of cars are not what they should be. Ask the other people there.

  4. Wow, Rick . . . I had no idea that mere mortals who weren’t buying couldn’t get close to the action. That is pretty weak. I know lots of swap meets that cost significantly less than $50 to get in.

You’re right, the cars on this year’s auction weren’t tremendously interesting. I probably only saw about 10 that I’d be willing to pay that kind of money for (assuming I had it, that is!).

I’ve got a feeling I’d probably enjoy a Kruse or Mecum auction more.

  5. Like Rick, I drove 6 hours and paid $50 for a ticket. You know all those cars you see in the advertisements for Barrett-Jackson? That’s as close as your gonna get unless you pay $350 for a Bidder’s ticket. It didn’t used to be like this. But I guess the sons have let the money go to their heads. As someone who has been at least 6 times, I will not return. If you are planning to go to the Riverside Auction, don’t bother!!
