CAN’T GET IT OUT OF MY HEAD

Is Electric Light Orchestra good or not? I can’t decide.

  1. ELO is better than good.

  2. Looking at them from a disco-hatin’, 30 year old glass ball, they are cheesy. Considering their times, I think they were OK though. You won’t catch me listening to their music however.

I always thought Jeff Lynne was an odd choice for the Travelling Wilburys though.

  3. Jon, I agree, Jeff Lynne was a strange choice, but the minute you heard a Wilburys song, you knew he was involved somehow. It just had the scent of ELO about it.

I agree that they rose above the dreck which surrounded them in the 70s. None of that makes me think that “Turn To Stone” or “Sweet Talkin’ Woman” are good songs, but I’ve some to realize that (a) I know more of their songs than I think I do, and (b) most of their other songs are pretty good.

  4. I thought Lynne was a part of it because he’d been a producer for Harrison, Orbison, and Petty.

  5. Well, they certainly get lots of points for originality. I was pretty young at the time, but I was a big ELO fan back in the day. I remember some TV special they had that was more or less a short concert. After seeing quite a few big production live performances, I think that ELO live would have been awesome.

I hear ELO a lot lately on TV. Mostly commercials, I think. It sounds good. So good, in fact, that I’ve started to think about actually acquiring some.
