"Me":

In other words, it was a perfect Corolla or Civic competitor. QED.

(I had an SL2, which had the more powerful engine - and it was somewhat fun to drive at that level, but I get what you're saying about presumably the SL1).

I had one of those first generation saturns. Completely unimpressed. The only thing that it had going for it was that nothing broke. Outside of that, it was underpowered, not good looking, barely fit 3 people (though I once put 9 in it) and generally speaking un-loveable.

Every other car I've had in my life, I've really enjoyed driving. That Saturn was nothing but a tool. A tool that served the purpose of locomotion quite well, but quite without interest.

Those first Saturns got no love, but everybody I knew who owned one seemed to like it.

I commented to your widdle bitty article. You forgot the first-gen Saturns, which were quite good (I owned one and loved it - about 98% as good as the Civic or Corolla of the day).

I too am a small car guy. I like the higher gas mileage and feel more comfortable manuvering a small car. The Focus is the only option from a Detroit company. Thus I end up looking at Mazdas and Toyotas.
